The Two Biggest Mistakes EFT Practitioners Make

The Two Biggest Mistakes EFT Practitioners Make

Deborah Lindsey, an experienced EFT practitioner and certifying instructor, has spent nearly twenty-five years observing the common pitfalls that tapping professionals encounter. Two mistakes stand out as the most frequent and impactful.

Mistake #1

The first and most common mistake is an overemphasis on positivity. Many practitioners try to bypass difficult emotions in favor of reassurance and “feeling good.” This tendency has been reinforced by the belief that any negative thought will automatically manifest, leading both practitioners and clients to fear emotional discomfort.

As a result, sessions may feel supportive on the surface but avoid the very material that needs attention. While ending a session on a positive note can be helpful, effective EFT requires the willingness to meet uncomfortable, painful, or disowned emotions directly.

When these feelings are ignored or prematurely reframed, the root issues remain intact, and any relief is often short-lived. True EFT work calls for calm, grounded, nonjudgmental presence. Practitioners must be willing to sit with emotional intensity and guide clients toward safely acknowledging, processing, and releasing the hidden burdens they carry. Lasting change comes not from avoiding discomfort, but from skillfully working through it.

Mistake #2

The second mistake is relying on rational explanations to make clients feel better. Some practitioners explain why clients should feel differently or reframe their experiences as just part of life. While reframing has value, it is not a replacement for doing the work that clears the underlying issues. If clients only hear explanations without having their emotional challenges addressed, they may leave appearing fine while still carrying unresolved feelings.

Once the deep emotional work is complete, incorporating positive tapping can help reinforce the shift. Positivity alone, however, cannot replace the essential process of uncovering and releasing the underlying emotions. Understanding these two common mistakes allows practitioners to provide more effective and lasting results for their clients and grow in their own professional skill.
